Hynix samples 512Mb DDR266 chips
DDR333 parts coming soon
Hynix has begun sampling 266MHz 0.13 micron 512Mb DDR SDRAM chips and has promised to begin sampling a 333MHz version soon, the company said yesterday.
An impressive technical achievement to be sure, but Hynix's announcement was more about marketing than engineering. Memory makers have only recently shifted up to 256Mb devices from 128Mb parts, and the transition to 512Mb isn't expected to take place until 2003, when even Hynix admits.
No, the announcement is really about stressing the company's role as a technology leader within the memory market, a key part of its programme to persuade the world that it has a future and its creditors that they should continue supporting it.
Indeed: "That Hynix was able to achieve this state-of-the-art technology during such hard times shows we're very competitive. We're a force to deal with," Hynix's worldwide marketing chief Farhad Tabrizi said yesterday.
Tabrizi also said Hynix would offer early samples of DDR 2 devices. ®
