BT kits out 1,000th DSL exchange

Available to 13m homes

BT Wholesale today hit a significant milestone in the roll-out of broadband in Britain with the announcement that it has installed ADSL kit in its 1000th exchange.

The "historic" exchange is in Livingston in the east of Scotland. It's not known if a plaque will be mounted on the exchange wall to commemorate this worthy event.

BT Wholesale claims that 60 per cent of UK households - 13 million homes - are now hooked up to a DSL-enabled exchange. However, that means that 40 per cent of UK homes still fall outside of BT's ADSL reach.

BT Wholesale also announced plans to launch this week a national marketing campaign to accelerate the take-up of broadband.

This is in addition to yesterday's announcement that the monster telco's mass market Internet business, BTopenworld, is to run an ad campaign to promote broadband. ®
