InterTrust seeks XP injunction

Extends claims to WPA, .NET

Digital rights management specialist InterTrust has applied for an eleventh hour injunction to prevent the release of Windows XP.

InterTrust today added three more patents to its claim against The Beast, and now argues that Microsoft's product activation feature, as well as the distributed .NET services to be included in XP (although this boils down to Passport) infringe on its own intellectual property.

The newly added patents are 5,892,900, 5,982,891 and 5,917,912.

Earlier this year InterTrust tried to stop Microsoft from selling Windows until it removed Media Player, which it said infringed on its DRM work.

In the past, Microsoft has found itself fighting some well-heeled legal opponents: Apple, the US government for example. InterTrust isn't one of them. In the six months to July this year, the company lost $55 million, on revenues of $2.2m million, although that included a $31m charge for "impairment of assets".
