IBM monsters hard drives

120GB for desktops, 60GB for notebooks

IBM is beefing up its Deskstar and Travelstar hard drive ranges, as well as bringing in enhanced availability models.

The 120GXP Deskstar family, aimed at desktop computers, comes in a 3.5-inch form factor and spins at 7,200RPM with a standard ATA-100 interface. It's available in 40, 80 and 120GB capacities and is designed on the 60GXP platform.

The product arrives not long after Western Digital announced a 120GB version of its popular Caviar drive, also a 7,200RPM ATA-100 drive.

Next, the 60GH Travelstar, aimed at the high-end mobile market, spins at 5,400RPM and has a 60GB capacity. It, like other Travelstar drives, uses IBM's adaptive battery life extender technology, squeezing extra battery life out of notebooks.

The 40GN Travelstar is a family of 4,200RPM drives that comes in 10, 20, 30 and 40GB sizes and will be included in IBM's range of ThinkPad notebooks.

The enhanced availability options offer all the same specs as the abovementioned Travelstar drives, but include some extra features that make it suitable for server environments that require higher levels of durability.

All the new drives have implemented the company's antiferromagnetically-coupled (AFC) media, referred to as "pixie-dust," across the product lines, allowing higher data stability and higher areal density.
