AMD delays Sledgehammer to Q1 2003

AMD Roadmap AMD has again delayed the release of its 64-bit Sledgehammer server processor for two- to eight-way systems. Having previously put back Sledgehammer to the second half of 2002, AMD now expects to ship the part in Q1 2003.

Clawhammer, the member of the Hammer family which is intended for uni-processer and dual-CPU servers, is still expected to ship late in the second half of 2002, but AMD's roadmap suggests that that will take place right at the very end of the year.

AMD announced the slip in shipping forecasts last night at its latest conference for financial analysts. Its presentation - found here - also shows the delay.

The company expects to sample both chips during the first half of 2002. Clawhammer's die will measure 64mm².

Hammer processors will appear in 2002, featuring in the desktop market in Q4 (see AMD plans to beat 4.4GHz desktops). Then, the company will ship a Hammer 3400, its latest roadmap reveals. Desktop Hammers will initially be fabbed at 0.13 micron before shrinking to 0.09 micron (some AMD documentation says "0.10 micron") during the second half of 2003. We expect the same will be true of Clawhammer and Sledgehammer.

Until Clawhammer ships, AMD will continue to address the multi-processor market with its Athlon MP, raising the clock speed over time and migrating to a 0.13 micron production process sometime during the first half of next year. At the low end, 0.18 micron multi-processor Durons will be replace by 0.13 micron versions during the second half of 2002. ®
