Singapore pirates flog WinXP for $2.75

Singapore software pirates have been busted selling Windows XP for as little as $2.75.

More than 4,000 illegal copies of Microsoft software have been seized in seven police raids across the island, CNET reports.

Windows XP Home edition was going for $2.75, and the Professional version was altogether pricier at $5.50. More than 80 per cent of the seized gooda were Windows XP.

The raids took place in October. The penalty for piracy in Singapore is up to seven years in jail.

In February, officers from the Intellectual Property Rights Branch of the Singapore Police Force said they had crushed a local software piracy syndicate with a co-ordinated raid on several targets.

Eight suspects were arrested in that operation , and 60,000 pirated CDs with a street value of about $396,000 were seized. ®
