Unlock to overclock

Dr Tom gets down and dirty with Athlon 4

HWRoundup Feel the need for speed? Tom's Hardware Guide (THG) has an in-depth article describing how to unlock an AMD processor for overclocking purposes.

AMD's newer chips are a lot tougher to tinker with than before, but certainly not impossible for determined speed freaks. The site posts benchmarks and says performance is comparable to what we can expect from AMD's unreleased 2000+ Athlon XP.

Icrontic

has the more offbeat method of doing the same thing, which includes nail polish remover, Krazy glue, packing tape and a rear window defogging kit.

Comdex
Anandtech

has a piece onComdex and how quiet it has been so far, including a picture to prove it. The event, as always, sees a wide array of new products, with nVidia's NV17M mobile chipset a notable example.

THG also has its first posts from the show, recording mostly yawns, especially in Billg's keynote where he waffles on about Tablet PCs, again, and how cool they will be when they move beyond prototype.

Drivers & downloads
AMD Zone

has a small mention of a possible issue with Windows XP not working with AMD's PowerNow! feature on some notebooks, with a link to a

solution available from Microsoft

that solves the problem.

Electic Tech has a

downloadable patch

allowing Windows XP users to copy a CD to an ISO file, complete with selectable recording speed, eject after burn and XP theme support.

VR-Zone

has some interesting information about what SiS plans to do with its chipsets, including the move to DDR400 and other goodies. ®
