RMS tagged as Gnomewhere man in board elections

Fork off

The Christmas piss-up of the Gnome board of directors should be a melodic one this year. Free software pioneer and evangelist Richard M Stallman has failed to be elected to the board, and we can assume, won't be serenading attendees with his rendition of The Free Software Song.

RMS came eighteenth out of 25 candiates, picking up 50 of the 420 eligible votes, and failed to get one of the eleven seats.

Stallman admitted he hadn't payed too much attention to the Gnome Project before deciding to run:-

"I have not followed [the mailing lists] before. I am starting now," he promised the discussion list on Sunday.

"I have a lot of respect for Richard Stallman's work both as a coder and as a philosopher. That having been said, thank GOD he didn't get elected to the GNOME board", wrote one poster at LinuxToday.

Stallman insists that his divisive reputation is unjustified. "People have given me have a reputation for being uncompromising," he says.

Jim Gettys, who led the X Window Project at DEC, came fourth with 182 votes.

But a spare a thought for fellow nominee, MIT undergraduate Rhett Creighton, who in his manifesto said he "wanted to use the position to impress chicks". Creighton received just one vote in the final ballot, and finished twenty fifth out of twenty five candidates.

In Britain, he'd have his own cable chat show by now. ®

* Note from puzzled editor. If you go here, you will see in the first line that the ballot of one Richard M Stallman seems to have been disallowed on the grounds of "missing member address." So they don't know where he lives?
