VIA November sales dip 10.9% month-on-month

Up fractionally on last year, though

VIA's November sales were up just 0.15 per cent on the same month last year, the chipset maker reported today. But the company sold more product in October than November - 10.9 per cent more.

Last month, VIA sold NT$2.710 billion ($78.493 million) worth of semiconductors, up from the NT$2.706 billion it reported this time least year.

A year ago, the chip industry was already feeling the effects of its customers' build-up of excess inventory: falling demand as chip buyers sought to clear stockpiles of components built up during 2000 and then never used as spending on a wide range of communications products from cellular phones to routers plummeted.

That was the start of the global chip recession, which many observers expected would end early 2001 following a quarter or so of inventory adjustment but which has continued throughout most of the year.

VIA, however, doesn't appear to have done too badly for itself. The sales it made during the first 11 months of 2001 are 11.8 per cent up on the same period last year. This year, between January and November, inclusive, it recorded $NT32.002 billion worth of sales - last year NT$28.620 billion.

November's sales may be fractionally up on November 2000, but the figure still represents a 10.9 per cent fall on October 2001. VIA isn't out of the woods just yet. ®
