KDE and GNOME bleed Xmas code

You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your dependency conflicts

Like two possessed Santas, cracking their whips over insane trains of hacker reindeer, the KDE and GNOME camps have been racing to bring you bleeding edge alpha code just in time for Christmas.

KDE put the first cut of its version 3.0 desktop out yesterday, less than a week after GNOME issued Platform Beta of its 2.0 desktop.

Reports of how many have been hurt, or how badly, by this code are hard to find as independent reports are scant. But you can find out for yourselves...

For what's new in KDE, click here. Code is available here via one of the KDE mirror sites.

The GNOME scheme is documented here in the developer .plan file. We've found this a very useful link in the past, a more useful jumping off point than the regulars' favorite, the Gnotices page, although it isn't always bang up to date (hint). And for the brave or the reckless, code starts at this FTP site.

Either way, we won't be touching this ourselves until 2004, or until we've slept off our Canard au Normandie, which is just going into the over now, ... or ... whichever comes first. But, hark, what's this?

"The screenshots look strangely like KDE 2.x. This is not a good thing, folks," reports one poster at the GNOME announcement.

That must be one of Santa's Trolls. ®
