Last week, Northern Light, the well-regarded search engine business, annnounced the closure of free facilities for consumers.
Instead it was to concentrate on supply its technology on fee-paying corporates. And so it is - only the technology has been sold to another company, in an all-stock deal. The price was not disclosed.
The new owner is divine inc., a US company which describes itself as a "premier integrated solution provider focused on the extended enterprise". In other words it operates in the dark and dank world of content management.
Northern Light gives divine another peg upon which to sell premium content. The company appears particularly sweet on Northern Light's Special Collection, apparently the world's biggest online business research library.
The combination of integrated content management, content aggregation and search facilities, adds up to a killer app for corporates, according to IDC's Susan Feldman. "divine now has a strong offering that will make other content-related software vendors and content aggregators sit up and take notice," she says in a statement on the divine press release.
"Integrated solutions enable an enterprise to develop an integrated information strategy based on the particular needs and processes of their organization. Workflow, categorization, tagging, publishing, search, and information analysis can now become one seamless process that builds a strong foundation for knowledge work." ®
