Want broadband? then club together

Interesting

Fixed wireless broadband operator Tele2 will provide broadband in areas currently not served by high-speed Net access – but only as long as there is proven demand.

The company says it is prepared to rollout its broadband services if at least 100 people from within a 10km radius area come forward.

Elliott Mueller, CEO at Tele2, said: "In essence what we'll be saying to the British people and enterprise is, if you can rally 100 small business customers in your area, all willing to sign up to the Tele2 service, we'll bring the network to you."

However, while this opportunity to hook up to broadband sounds appealing, it also underlines one of the imponderables of the current situation; exactly how much demand is there for broadband?

Mr Mueller believes demand for broadband is "a bit over-hyped" – hence the condition attached to the investment in rolling out broadband.

We shall see. ®
