Orange jumps into mobile gambling market

Under starter's orders for the Grand National

Orange has teamed up with ukbetting to enable punters to place bets on tomorrow's Martell Grand National from their mobile phones.

The service, which went live yesterday and is the first of its kind for both parties, will allow Orange customers with WAP-enabled handsets to access ukbetting.com and place tax-free bets. Prospective punters must first visit Orange.co.uk to register and set up an account, and (like most similar services) this can only be done from a normal PC terminal.

When an account is set up it can be used to place bets on any further horse races, followed by a football betting services in time for the World Cup this summer.

Disappointingly, Orange didn't have any tips for us on likely winners of the Grand National and neither did Reg supremo Linus Birtles, who failed to back a winner on his visit to Aintree yesterday.

Guess it's back to sticking pins in a copy of the racing pages tomorrow then... ®
