Tele2 is to guarantee broadband service levels for its
business customers, the wireless broadband outfit
confirmed today at the Internet World show in London.
The measure is part of a shift in strategy for Tele2
after it decided to move away from home users and
concentrate instead on business customers.
It's also an admission that it cannot compete with ADSL and cable players on price – especially for home
users. It claims there simply isn't enough demand from
home users and that recent price cuts for ADSL, for
example, are only a short-term measure.
Instead, it's decided to focus all its resources
targeting SMEs claiming that it can guarantee uptime
levels of 99.9 per cent for business users.
Said Elliot Mueller, CEO of Tele2: "We are able to
offer a guaranteed level of service because we own our
own network…that enables us to bypass the problems
that have frustrated the ADSL providers.
"Incumbents are currently controlling the consumer
broadband market so there is little room for smaller
operators like Tele2 to competitively offer the
quality consumers really want.
"Until dominant access providers offer something more
than a basic broadband connection, consumer demand
will remain low," he said.
Tele2's new business-focused strategy does not mean
that Tele2 will abandon its home users altogether. It
says it will continue to support them – and take on
new customers if approached. ®
