Samsung still tops

ComputerWire: IT Industry Intelligence

Taiwanese LCD suppliers outstripped their Korean counterparts for the first time in the first quarter, the latest numbers from DisplaySearch show.

The research house, which specializes in the display market, said that shipments of 10-inch-plus LCDs rose 88% year-on-year and 9% sequentially to 16.1 million units in the first quarter. Total revenues rose 47% year-on-year and 20% sequentially to $4.1bn, with ASPs falling 22% year-on-year, but rising 10% sequentially, to $253.

The figures showed that demand from the monitor market outstripped that from the traditional notebook market during the period.

On a regional basis, the company said that in the first quarter, Taiwanese-owned vendors' shipments rose 18% sequentially, and 311% year on year, which gave them a 38% to 35% advantage over Korean vendors. Nevertheless, Korean giant Samsung remains the number one vendor in the market, followed by LG Phillips.
