Oracle has posted a benchmarking result which showed its database software on a Linux platform outperformed Microsoft SQL Server by 14 per cent.
The results come from running Oracle9i Database Release 2 with Real Application Clusters on Linux against Microsoft SQL Server 2000 on a 32-processor cluster configuration, with identical processors and the same amount of memory per CPU.
Oracle achieved 138,362.03 tpmC and a price performance of $17.21/tpmC running on Linux, compared to 121,319.23 tpmC with a price performance of $18.97 tpmC for SQL Server.
However, the gloss is taken off the results somewhat because the HP ProLiant DL580R Server Oracle used to post its figures won't be available until May next year, whereas the MS result comes on a IBM xSeries 370 released last year.
Oracle is also claiming a "world record" TPC-C 32-processor clustered benchmark on Linux using Oracle9i Database Release 2 with Real Application Clusters. An odd form of words which amounts to a head to head between Oracle 9i and IBM DB2 on Linux only, we suspect.
Still the results sound good.
