Dell extends top-end of Inspiron line
8500 intended to supplant desktops
Dell will extend its Insprion notebook line today at the top-end, having beefed up the low-end and mid-range on Monday.
The latest addition to the line is the Inspiron 8500, based on Intel Mobile Pentium 4-M processors clocked at 2GHz. Designed as a desktop replacement, the base 8500 configuration includes a 40GB hard drive, 512MB of 266MHz DDR memory, combo DVD/CD-RW drive and 15.4in display. The entry price is $2299. All systems include two USB 2.0 ports and one IEEE 1394 port, integrated modem and Ethernet ports. Graphics come courtesy of Nvidia's GeForce 4 4200 Go chip.
However, buyers can extend the processor speed to 2.4GHz, and choose to install optional 802.11b, 802.11g and Bluetooth wireless connectivity units.
The addition of the 8500 follows the launch of the Inspirons 1100 and 5100 on Monday. ®
