BT faces enquiry over ‘unlimited’ dotmusic claims

Trading standards

Trading standards officers have been notified over accusations that BT is "misleading" the public by calling its new online music-on-demand service "unlimited".

Rival music download service, Wippit, has already contacted trading standards officers at Westminster City Council who are said to be looking into the matter.

Said Wippit founder, Paul Myers: "We've already had a conversation with trading standards officers who are as concerned as we are that the BT claim is more than a little misleading."

According to BT, its 'dotmusic on demand' service, powered by Peter Gabriel's OD2 music outfit, provides "unlimited downloads" and streams 10 free burns for £9.99 a month.

However, Wippit points out that these downloads can't be transferred to other playing machines unless they are purchased. The music also become unusable if the punter ceases to subscribe to the service.

Wippit maintains that a more accurate description of 'dotmusic on demand' is 'Quite a Large Music Rental Service'.

Mr Myers told The Register that he contacted trading standards officers because "BT was calling something unlimited when clearly it wasn't".

"They're saying something that isn't true," he said, insisting that if people believe BT's hype and sign up to the service then they are likely to be disappointed. ®
