800MHz FSB Pentium 4s appear in Japan
Engineering samples
Sample versions of Intel's upcoming 800MHz quad-pumped frontside bus Pentium 4 have appeared in Japan, local web site PC Watch reports.
At least one store in Tokyo's Akihabara district is showing off the processor, though as yet it has not put the chip up for sale. It's showing two chips, rated at 2.6GHz and 2.8GHz, both with a 'C' suffix which apparently indicates they support the 800MHz FSB. They also carry the 'ES' coding to indicate they are engineering samples.
The bus operates at 200MHz, but by delivering four bits per clock cycle, achieves an effective bus speed of 800MHz.
The 800MHz FSB is expected to debut with Intel's Canterwood/i875P chipset later this month. Intel is expected to ship a compatible 3GHz P4 at the same time, followed by 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8GHz parts in May. ®
