Purple Software assets bought

P800 games release

A founder of games developer Purple Software, which went into liquidation back in January, has set up a new company after successfully negotiating a management buyout of the PDA assets with Purple's liquidators.

John Holloway, former technical director at Purple Software, has set up ZingMagic to develop a range of games for mobile phones on the back of assets obtained from Purple.

ZingMagic has teamed up with a company called Cascata to publish its games. In due course, the Purple name will be replaced with Cascata-branded product, Holloway tells us.

The first fruits of the ZingMagic/Cascata alliance are six new game titles for the SonyEricsson P800 phone running the Symbian OS. These seems an apt choice since prior to his spell at Purple Software, Holloway spent 10 years at Psion, where he helped develop the Symbian OS.

Of the six titles being released, three are traditional card games, and the remaining three are classic board games that feature an SMS gameplay option. The card games are Hearts, Spades and Euchre (a US card game). The board games are Draughts (Checkers), Othello (Reversi) and Four-in-a-Line (Connect4).

The SMS gameplay option available with these board games is based on a two-player scenario, and works directly with the contact and messaging applications on the SonyEricsson P800.

After previously publishing games designed for PDAs, the games represent Cascata's first retail offering in the mobile phone arena.

Players can purchase each game title individually at a recommended price of between $12.99 and $14.99, or alternatively bought as a classic collection set of three card/board games for $29.99.

Trial versions of all games are available to download from Cascatagames.com, and from the Handango.com online retail store where they are also available for purchase. ®
