AMD ships Athlon XP 3200+
400MHz FSB here at long last
AMD has launched the long-awaited Athlon XP 3200+ desktop processor. Based on the Barton core, the new chip is AMD's first to officially support a 400MHz frontside bus.
The 3200+ comes it a remarkably low $464, in batches of 1000, rather less than we and many others AMD watchers had anticipated. It's also well under the $637 price that Intel's upcoming 3.2GHz Pentium 4 is expected to launch at later this month.
AMD says the 3200+ "outperforms its closest competitor by an average of six per cent on a variety of industry-standard software benchmarks" - though what that CPU is, it doesn't say. The 3.2GHz P4? Or a P4 with a lesser FSB frequency? Whatever, we look forward to independent tests to show the 3200+'s true potential.
