Wi-Fi makes a splash

18 marinas hooked up

The Register's Wireless LAN Channel Wi-Fi is taking to the waves. Eighteen marinas in the UK are being equipped to offer wireless Internet access.

The service is being run by Square Mile International - a wireless ISP (WISP) - along with the UK-wide broadband Wi-Fi hot spot network, The Cloud.

According to the PR fluff, it will let sailors access the latest weather reports or tidal information on the Internet or keep in touch with their office while sitting on their boats in the marina.

So far, marinas in Portsmouth, Chichester and Hartlepool, among others, have been turned into "hotspots" with other marinas in the UK are also being lined up for the Wi-Fi service.

There are also ambitious plans to kit out other marinas around the world.

The service costs from £15 for unlimited use for 24 hours or £25 a month.

Earlier this month The Cloud began offering its Wi-Fi services at 200 pubs in the UK.

Service is free for the first six weeks as it begins to roll out services to 1,000 sites (all pubs) by the beginning of July and 3,000 sites by the end of the year. ®
