Intersil, ViXs tout high quality video over 54Mbps WLANs
Technology share
WLAN chip maker Intersil and video networking silicon specialist ViXS Systems are to incorporate each others' technologies into their own products to provide high quality video over 54Mbps Wi-Fi networks.
ViXS will initially combine its Matrix 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band MAC and PHY chipset with Intersil's Prism Indigo 802.11a radio chip. Later, the two will migrate the technology to 802.11g. They will also bring together ViXS' Xcode video transrating and transcoding chip with Intersil's Prism GT chipset and its Nitro technology.
ViXS' Matrix chipset delivers improved video performance by delivering dual-channel links, one for video and another for less time-dependent traffic. It incorporates 802.11e-based wireless multimedia quality-of-service provision.
Nitro is designed to improve 802.11g connections in a mixed 802.11b/g environment - essentially ensuring that 802.11g users don't always drop down to 802.11b performance. Xcode dynamically adjust video bit rates, resolutions and formats of multiple MPEG streams to match available bandwidth, so there's a natural match with Nitro, which dynamically assigns 802.11g users more bandwidth when it can. ®
