AOL rolls onto NTL broadband
One way or another, they're gonna get you
NTL cable customers can sign up to AOL's broadband service from today.
The roll-out follows a wholesale agreement between the two companies signed last December.
The deal, worth £85m over four years, means that AOL can provide its service to 7.2m broadband-enabled households in the cableco's franchise area in addition to the 70 per cent of UK households that get AOL Broadband via a BT telephone line. AOL has offered its narrowband services over NTL's network for some time under a separate agreement.
AOL said the broadband agreement with NTL means it has the largest potential customer base of any UK terrestrial broadband service provider. AOL Broadband costs £27.99 per month for 12 months (more expensive that some ISPs) but free modem and installation meaning there are no upfront set-up charges.
Broadband connections operate at speeds up to either 512kbps on DSL or 600kbps on the NTL cable network. AOL Broadband also includes built-in anti-virus email scanning, free customer support and anti-spam features.
Karen Thomson, chief executive of AOL UK, said: "We believe that our exclusive content package, genuinely high-speed service with no upfront costs and free customer support combine to make AOL Broadband the UK's best broadband service. We want to make it available to as many consumers as possible and rolling out on the NTL network significantly increases our reach ahead of our rivals." ®
