EMC dips into HP's storage exec pool – again
Elias on board
Like a number of former HP storage executives before him Howard Elias has joined EMC.
Elias, 46, served as senior veep of business operations and management in HP's Enterprise Systems Group until his exit from the company last month. His unemployed status lasted but a few weeks with EMC now scooping him up as the new EVP of New Ventures. Elias will report straight to the top, answering to Joe Tucci, EMC CEO.
EMC has benefited the most from a mass exodus of storage executives departing HP. Mark Lewis, current head of EMC's open software group, and Mark Sorenson are two of the most high profile execs to join the dark side from HP. Roger Archibald, former VP of NAS systems at HP, has also left the company.
These moves must be painful for HP, as it competes against EMC with unparalleled vigor. There are, perhaps, no two greater enemies in all of the hardware business - at least if their PR teams are any indication.
The loss of Elias also points to fallout from HP's acquisition of Compaq. Elias led a very successful storage business at Compaq and then took on the same role at HP. He was, however, moved from storage to enterprise systems a year after the acquisition - a shift that did not sit well with the exec.
Now, he is working for the enemy, trying to help it crack into new markets. Elias will manage EMC's Centera system operations and look for other potential growth areas. ®
