Apple today expanded its iMac line with a 20in display model, and filled out its Power Mac G5 family with a 1.8GHz dualie.

The 20in iMac is based on the same 1.25GHz G4-class processor as the current 17in model. The two new machines also share the same memory, graphics and storage specs.: 256MB of 333MHz DDR SDRAM, 64MB Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics and 4x DVD-R/CD-RW optical drive.

All three currently available iMacs - there's a 1GHz 15in model, too - offer two 400MBps 1394 and three USB 2.0 ports, integrate a 56Kbps modem and 10/100Mbps Ethernet on the motherboard, bundle a pair of Apple Pro speakers and are ready for internal 802.11g and Bluetooth wireless options. All three offer 80GB hard drives, but the 15in model only contains a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive and 32MB Nvidia GeForce 4 MX graphics.

It costs £999/$1299. The 17in model costs £1449/$1799 and the 20in iMac £1749/$2199.

The dual 1.8GHz G5 replaces the existing single-processor 1.8GHz model, leaving the low-end 1.6GHz machine as the only single-CPU Power Mac. The dual 2GHz remains the top-of-the-range desktop.

The dualies both offer 512MB of 400MHz DDR and a total of 1MB of L2 cache (512KB per processor). The frontside bus is half clock speed. Both offer 160GB of Serial ATA hard drive storage. The 2GHz machine ships with a 64MB ATI Radeon 9600 Pro graphics card; the 1.8GHz model, like the 1.6GHz G5, uses a 64MB Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra board.

The 1.6GHz machine also supports only 333MHz SDRAM, shipping with 256MB worth. It has three PCI slots; the others have three PCI-X slots.

All three machines contain a DVD-R/CD-RW optical drive, AGP 8x graphics port, 56Kbps modem, Gigabit Ethernet, one 800MBps 1394 port, two 400MBps 1394 ports and three USB 2.0 ports. Bluetooth and 802.11g is offered as an optional extra.

The 1.6GHz model costs £1399/$1799 - down from £1549/$1999 - the dual 1.8GHz machine costs £1899/$2499 and the dual 2GHz G5 is £2299/$2999. ®
