Infineon preps €120m R&D fab expansion plan

Costs €1m for every new job created

Infineon said today it plans to expand its Dresden Memory Development Centre (MDC), creating 120 new jobs.

The MDC focuses on DRAM and Flash fabrication process R&D. The expansion programme will involve the construction of an additional facility at the site, adding 2300m² of cleanroom dedicated to work on 300mm wafers.

The new complex will be sited alongside Infineon's existing fab, and is expected to be completed early next year.

The project is projected to cost the company €120 million - which very tidily works out at €1 million per job created.

Infineon's development centre and production fabs already employ 5,400 people, though the workforce will rise to 5,800 by the end of the company's 2004 fiscal year, which will come to a close on 30 September.

Infineon's plant is just down the road from AMD's Dresden Fab 30. ®
