HP nips and tucks low-end servers

Blade play

HP has pepped up the low-end of its server line with a new blade system and a new box aimed at small businesses.

The ProLiant BL30p was designed to let customers cram up to 192 processors in a single rack. Customers can fit 16 of the dual-processor blades in 6U (10.5 inches) of rack space.

The server uses Intel's Xeon processor and is aimed at Web hosting, clusters and high performance computing. Users can also outfit the BL30p with dual Fibre Channel ports for use in SANs (storage area networks).

Further down the product line is the new ProLiant ML 110 server. This is a one processor box, running on Intel's discount Celeron chip or Pentium 4 processor. The tower server supports up to 4GB of memory and is aimed at customers with tight budgets. The new box starts at $507 and runs up to $1,500, depending on the configuration.

HP is hoping smaller customers will pick up the ProLiant ML110 for Web serving, email and firewall functions. ®
