HP to upgrade AMD to business class
First time in Europe
HP is to bring AMD processors to its European business desktop PC range.
While the PC giant has offered business-oriented desktops in the US since 2002, the launch of the HP dx6050 on 10 May will mark the first time it has done so on this side of the Pond.
HP UK already offers Athlon-based machines aimed at the consumer and home office markets under the Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion brands. AMD-based systems from other vendors in Europe have tended to target the consumer and pro-sumer markets, too, rather than pure-play business PC buyers.
The dx6050 will be pitched at SMEs, and the government and public sector arena. According to researcher Context, those markets account for over 60 per cent of the business PCs sold in Western Europe. As such, HP's moves marks a big win for AMD, which has struggled to establish itself in the business PC market - as much thanks to Dell's reluctance to support its processors, as anything else.
Context claims AMD had a 12 per cent share of the Western European PC market in Q4 2003, "with its business heavily weighted towards consumer products". ®
