Ofcom wants to "challenge" the UK's communications industry to devise a universal content labelling scheme that can apply to TV, Internet, the mobile and games industries.
Setting out its latest consultation, Ofcom's bid to examine media literacy is based on bringing about a "better public understanding of the nature and characteristics of material published by means of electronic media".
And although Ofcom has no statutory role in the regulation of Internet content (its work will focus mainly on TV and radio, as it happens) it still wants to look at content-related issues for electronic media.
As well as undertaking research, Ofcom will work with broadcasters and other industry sectors to examine whether a "common content labelling scheme for electronic audiovisual material [can be] delivered across all broadcast and interactive platforms".
As a first step, Ofcom wants to see working group set up including the BBC, ITV and other broadcasters, major ISPs and mobile phone operators. ®
