EMC on Monday announced updates to its Centera data archiving product that give customers access to new software packages and better management tools.

The main Centera upgrade comes courtesy of EMC's Legato software division. Legato's EmailXtender software has been tuned to work with the Centera API, making it possible to archive and retrieve email from Microsoft Exchange and Lotus.

EMC bills this Legato/Centera combination as its Proven Solution for E-mail Archiving offering. Basically, the pairing is meant for any company looking to meet email retention requirements.

EMC has also updated the software that runs right on the Centera systems, releasing Version 2.3 of the CentraStar operating software. The latest code has some other key advances for complying with regulatory demands on archived information.

First up, administrators can now make changes to data retention policies for classes of content instead of needing to manage each piece of content on its own. This advance can simplify the way a company deals with a change in corporate policy.

A second new tool is designed to protect the privacy of exiting workers. Administrators can now use the "audited delete" technology to erase a leaving worker's information automatically - a requirement in some countries. ®
