Amazon bids adieu to French jobs

Le downsizing et la centralisation

Amazon is to downsize its French back office, resulting in an unspecified number of job losses.

The giant e-tailer has confirmed that it plans to centralise "several business functions" to the UK and US. But it says it will still maintain a presence in France.

The company is still committed to "creating a viable and competitive business in France but we are consolidating our organization so we can take advantage of the Amazon Group’s improved technology and central processes, so we can better serve customers, save money and be competitive."

Anyone who doesn't find alternative work in the company will receive a "generous package with severance and significant social measures". Which is nice.

Amazon also confirmed that it is looking to make "some changes within the site development team in the UK", but declined to comment further on a Register report last week that 20 workers could be axed, except to say that the figure was "grossly inflated".

It also declined to comment about how many jobs have been lost in total as it carries out its "centralisation of business functions".

A spokeswoman told us: "On a global level, Amazon has made changes to all our locations regarding the centralisation of business functions over the past years and months."
