AMD knocks up to 30% off Athlon 64 prices

But FX and XP prices rise

AMD adjusted its desktop processor pricing today, cutting what it charges for Athlon 64 processor by up to 30.9 per cent while increasing the cost of its Athlon 64 FX chip and some Athlon XP parts to compensate.

The chip maker also took the axe to a stack of lower-end Athlon XP parts presumably to make room for August's anticipated Sempron launch.

Gone from AMD's official price list are the XP 2200+ through to the 2700+. The list now shows only the 2800+, 3000+ and 3200+. Of those, the first two were granted price rises, with the former's price tag up 28 per cent.

The gamer-oriented Athlon 64 FX-53 also saw its price raised, from $799 to $827, up 3.5 per cent. No doubt AMD is banking on its specialist nature to support the rise. ®
