Apple has stopped offering the latest version of McAfee's anti-virus package to Mac users following reports of widespread problems with the software.
McAfee Virex 7.5 was pulled from Apple's .Mac online service last week - only days after its introduction - following a series of complaints. "Due to customer feedback and technical issues currently under investigation, we have temporarily discontinued distribution of Virex 7.5 from McAfee until further notice," it said in a brief statement.
Security-concious users are advised to remove Virex 7.5 from their systems and to revert to using an earlier version, Virex 7.2.1, instead. Users reported a variety of problems with Virex 7.5 on Apple message boards - including cases where running Virus 7.5 deleted all email messages in users' inboxes.
September is proving to be a hazardous month for McAfee and its users. Earlier this week the AV giant faced criticism after it introduced an update that misidentified an ISP connection wizard application as Trojan code. The mistake caused considerable inconvenience for end users running McAfee and older versions of ISPWizard, generating avoidable support calls for ISPs. Developer Mark Griffiths is critical of McAfee's decision to release updated signature files to consumers only a week after problems hit. ®
