O2 unveils XDA IIs, IIi Wi-Fi Pocket PCs

Blackberry support coming next year

Mobile network O2 will ship an updated XDA II later this year taken from the same mould from which T-Mobile's upcoming MDA III is cast. A second model will ship early 2005.

O2 XDA IIs The XDA IIs features the same slide out QWERTY keyboard as the MDA III, and brings 802.11b Wi-Fi connectivity to the XDA family.

The O2 device will also include RIM's Blackberry Connect software, but not until "early 2005", the network said. With the UK release taking place in November, with Germany following by the end of the year, it's hoped O2 will make the software available to early buyers as a free download.

Sporting a 2.5in 65,000-colour 240 x 320 display, the XDA IIs also features a VGA digicam. Powered by a 400MHz Intel XScale PXA264 processor, the device contains 128MB of RAM and 96MB of ROM - on which is stored Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. An MMC/SD IO card slot is provided for expansion.

Measuring 12.5 x 7.2 x 1.9cm, the XDA IIs weighs 205g. Its battery is a 1490mAh job - 25 per cent higher then the XDA II's power source - that provides four hours' talk time and 168 hours' on standby. The device will run as a PDA for 17 hours on a single charge. The PDA contains a quad-band GSM/GPRS radio.

O2 said the XDA IIs will retail for £449 when it ships on 1 November, though it added that "certain outlets" would be charging less, without naming names or prices.

Pricing for the XDA IIi has yet to be set, but O2 did say that the device will include a faster, 520MHz PXA270 processor and a 1.3 megapixel digicam. It too will be a Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition device. ®
