T-Mobile: UK will get Windows Mobile smart phone
Smart Digital Assistant on its way
Mobile phone network T-Mobile will ship its version of HTC's latest Windows Mobile 2003-based smart phone next month under the Smart Digital Assistant (SDA) brand.
The tri-band handset will go on sale in Germany in October, but IDG cites a T-Mobile spokesman claiming that the handset will soon appear in the UK, the Netherlands, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria and possibly the US too.
The device sports a large 16-bit colour screen, integrated digicam, Bluetooth connectivity and expansion courtesy of an SD card slot. The rechargeable battery yields sufficient power for 240 minutes' talk time or 200 hours' standby time.
T-Mobile will sell the handset for €100 (£68) with a two-year contract, or €270 (£184) with no contract.
The SDA is believed to be based on Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC's Feeler handset, itself a version of the company's Typhoon model, which is better known as the Orange SPV C500.
HTC has quickly become one of the key Windows Mobile smart phone and cellular-enabled Pocket PC vendors, providing not only the SPV C500, but Orange's SPV E200 smart phone and the network's SPV M1000 wireless Pocket PC. O2's XDA and XDA II wireless PDAs are also made by HTC, as are T-Mobile's MDA series of wireless Pocket PC machines.
Its main rival is Motorola, which currently offers the MPx200 and is set to release its delayed MPx220 in Q4. Mitac offshoot Mio is shipping its 8930 Windows Mobile smart phone in the UK via local distributor AGB Global, but is pitching the device direct to resellers rather than the networks. ®
