ATI top-end GPUs to win back 'channel leadership'

R520, RV530, RV515 to take on Nvidia

ATI's next-generation desktop graphics processor, R520, has already been claimed to have been scheduled for a June launch, but a leaked channel roadmap suggests we can expect to see the RV530 following not long after and the RV515 in the Autumn.

If the presentation slide - which is marked with the slogan "Regaining channel leadership", implying ATI has lost it - containing the roadmap is accurate and up to date, ATI's high-end chips will sport twin PCI Express and AGP interfaces. ATI currently offers separate versions of its Radeon X850 chips with either the old or the new interconnect technology. PCI-E parts can also gain AGP 8x support through the company's 'Rialto' bridge chip.

The R520 - said to be the "world's first 90nm technology graphics product" - follows on from the X850, X800 and X800 XL chips. The RV530, is the successor to the X700 Pro. The RV515 will succeed the X300 and X300SE. RV530 will ship in Q2, with RV515 following in the Q3/Q4 timeframe, the slide indicates.

The R520 is expected to support ATI's answer to Nvidia's SLi multi-card co-operative rendering system, and has been claimed to support up to 32 parallel pixel processing pipelines, though not all of them may be enabled at launch. The chip is said to support DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0, aling with GDDR 3 memory clocked to 1.8GHz effective. The core has been reported to run at 700MHz. ®
