Veritas embraces 64-bit Windows/Linux on Opteron

Veritas has modernized its storage and server software this week by moving large parts of its product lines behind AMD's 64-bit Opteron processor and Microsoft's latest software.

Fans of both Veritas and the Opteron chip will be pleased to see 64-bit versions of the company's major products readied for both Windows and Linux. The Veritas Storage Foundation - a combination of its Volume Manager and File System products - and NetBackup products are available now for all the latest iterations of Windows, Red Hat Linux and SuSE Linux, including Windows Server 2003 X64.

In addition, customers will find a 64-bit version of Veritas's OpForce server provisioning package for Red Hat and SuSE Linux and a 64-bit version of Backup Exec for Windows Server systems.

Also on the 64-bit front, Veritas said that its high-end Storage Foundation High Availability (HA) product for Windows is good to go with Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions. So, with the 4.3 release of the software customers receive support for the latest Itanium, Opteron and Xeon boxes.

This release also supports the upcoming SQL Server 2005 product and Microsoft's multipath I/O driver architecture for Hitachi TagmaStore USP models 100, 600 & 1000, HP SureStore E Disk Array XP12000 and IBM TotalStorage DS8000 hardware.

Last and possibly least, Veritas's i3 application management suite has been tuned to work with Microsoft's .Net framework and SQL Server 2005 databases.

Veritas made its name doing backup for Windows boxes and handling storage tasks for Solaris systems. Over the past few years, it has worked hard to expand its product line to new chip architectures and operating systems, and these moves are clearly in line with that strategy. The company awaits its fold into Symantec, which should occur in the very near future. ®
