Nvidia updates drivers to confound CrossFire

'14x antialiasing? Pah! We do 16x!'

Nvidia last night posted its latest ForceWare graphics drivers, touting the new release's inclusion of a new antialiasing mode delivered by the company's SLi technology.

ForceWare 77.76 introduces a 16x antialiasing mode, with the two SLi-connected graphics cards co-operating to render a single scene, this time pursuing image quality rather than higher framerates.

The new rendering mode is a pot shot at Nvidia's arch-rival, ATI, which launched its own alternative to SLi, dubbed CrossFire, in June this year. CrossFire likewise provides a high-degree antialiasing mode, though it only goes up to 14x.

Nvidia admitted the 77.76 driver was unfinished - the software is still in the beta-testing phase. The availability of the drivers comes as ATI gears up to ship its first CrossFire-compatible card, the Radeon X850 CrossFire Edition, due to be followed by the Radeon X800 CrossFire Edition next month.

Nvidia also said ForceWare 77.76 will bring SLi support to its GeForce 6600 LE chip, the better to bring the technology down to more mainstream price-points. It claimed the driver now includes SLi optimisations for more than 100 games. ®
