Vodafone adds 4m customers

Good quarter

Vodafone gained 4.1m customers in the three months ended 30 June 2005 and upped proportionate mobile revenues by 8.6 per cent compared to the same period a year ago.

The mobile giant claims 165m customers worldwide which is organic growth of 12.3 per cent. Vodafone has 1.1m registered 3G devices.

The figures are in line with Vodafone's previous expectations so it is reiterating its guidance for the year.

In Germany customers grew 8.8 per cent year on year and churn was stable. Average Revenue Per User (Arpu) fell slightly to €295 from €299 thanks to lower spending new customers and the fall in termination rates.

In the UK Vodafone grew customer numbers by 8.9 per cent to 15.5m. Arpu fell slightly from £306 to £300, again due to declined termination rates. Non-voice service revenue increased by 11.9 per cent year on year including a 50.7 per cent increase in non-messaging data revenue - driven by Vodafone live! with 3.7m users.

Vodafone Japan lost 72,000 customers in the quarter leaving it with 14.6m. Churn fell slightly as did Arpu and service revenues. ®
