Mark/Space brings Windows smart phone sync to Mac

Fixes Tiger glitch, too

Mark/Space has updated Missing Sync for Pocket PC to fix the break introduced when Apple launched Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger'.

The company has also changed the product's name to Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, to flag up the software's new support for Windows Mobile-based smart phones, such as Orange's SPV C550 and M500, as well as PDAs.

Windows Mobile devices - both smart phone and Pocket PCs - provide data synchronisation with Windows PCs out of the box. Mark/Space's code allows the handhelds to be hosted by Macs. In particular, it ties the devices into Apple's iCal and Address Books using the operating system's ISync system.

However, the iSync 2, introduced in April with Mac OS X 10.4, contained changes sufficient to break Missing Sync for Pocket PC 1.0.4.

That's fixed now, Mark/Space says, in version 2.0, which also adds synchronisation support for Microsoft's Mac-based email, contacts and calendaring application, Entourage. The software is based on a new plug-in architecture the better to allow third-party to synchronise their own apps' data with the handheld's databases.

The new version uses Microsoft's Pocket Outlook Object Model to improve performance but more importantly to ensure consistency when the device is synchronised on both a Mac and a PC. SyncMinder, meanwhile, provides regular reminders to synchronise your device, which can be connected across a USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi link.

Missing Sync for Windows Mobile is available immediately as a download at Mark/Space's website for $40. A boxed version will go on sale later this summer for $50, the company said. Anyone who bought the previous version on or after 1 April 2005 qualifies for a free upgrade, it added, while owners of any previous Missing Sync product, regardless of platform, get the update for half price. ®
