Welcome to the Rotting Dog Blog

November 13, 2005 - 12:15 pm

Welcome indeed. I don't know about you, but I've found that the blogosphere has really opened my mind to a whole new world of personal freedom. Before Linus Torvalds invented the blog, I had pretty much nothing to say about anything. It's just like the news went in one ear and out the other. Now I find my head packed with important opinions - opinions that other bloggers like you want to read. So, I'm a real person now, and it's all thanks to the Internet. I mean, Jesus, just what the hell did we used to do before the Wonderful, Wonderful World Wide Web? Damned if I can remember.

Evolution

November 13, 2005 - 14:12 pm

Got a call from mom to remind me that before the Internet I used to spend all day watching TV. Speaking of consumer electronics, I was pretty pissed to read on Bob Berserker's TechnoKrunch blog that Sony was charging 15 per more for wholesale sales to Internet retailers, so that the big stores can compete. This just makes my blood boil - it's called evolution, fellas, survival of the fittest. Well, not in Pennsylvania it isn't: they call it "Intelligent Business Design".

Whatever. Here's the bottom line: I'm declaring an immediate boycott on all Sony products. OK, not until after Christmas because I've promised myself a new 42in plasma screen for the holiday and the Sony one just kicks ass. But after that, no more Sony stuff for me, no siree.

Insanity

November 13, 2005 - 19:40 pm

Just picked up the news that three US army guys have been blown up in Baghdad by another roadside bomb. I ask myself: what do these lunatics think they'll gain from all this. I mean, apart from control of Iraq?

Right after that was a blogspeed newspulse that a ten-year-old in Florida has been busted by cops after wardriving the wireless LAN of a local live porn streaming outfit while drunk on Jim Bean in his dad's car. When the cops moved in, he brandished a 38 special at officers. Jesus. What kind of parent would lend a ten-year-old the car in the first place?

The future of the Internet is in your hands

November 14, 2005 - 03:40 am

I'll admit it, this WSIS Tunis thing has got me pretty rattled. According to a posting on ListenToMe.me.me.uk, if the US retains control of the Internet it could tip the world three degrees on its axis of rotation provoking worldwide famine on a Biblical scale, or worse. Isn't anyone going to do anything about this shit?

Try to stay calm

November 14, 2005 - 07:53 am

Got to try and calm down about the WSIS crisis. Went to Uncle Tom Cobbley's Hardware blog. He reckons it would take 20,000 wind turbines to power a city the size of Paris. Jeez, where the hell are they going to put these things? What do the locals think of the idea? Surely there's some way of floating them out to sea on a big raft or something?

Fire down below

November 14, 2005 - 10:04 am

The morning's not getting any better. Uncle Tom Cobbley reports that Intel's Presler 65nm dual-core chip is unstable. Seems they sent out some samples and the damn things are just all over the place. Don't they have guys down at the factory to check them before they go out the door? Makes you wonder what kind of dangerous crap is lurking in your mini-tower.

Panic

November 14, 2005 - 17:30 pm

Semi-panic across the blogosphere after ListenToMe.me.me.uk failed to post for more than an hour. He's been covering the WSIS thing in Tunisia. Dad says the place is more dangerous than Vietnam, El Salvador and Liberia rolled into one, wherever they are. Hang on in there, bud - the blogging community is with you.

While I'm online, help me out here people: Natalie Portman in Phantom Menace or Carrie Fisher in Return of the Jedi? The toilet wall's only big enough for one giant poster, so a decision has to be made.

Shit

November 14, 2005 - 20:09 pm

Shit. I've hit a glitch with my 42in Sony plasma masterplan. The current set is standing on one of those smoked glass tables with chrome legs - like the ones your mom and dad had in the 70s that came in a sort of cluster or nest. Problem is, I don't reckon it'll take the weight of the beast. So, I need to build some sort of shelf-type structure. I'll fire up the CAD and see what brews. Any suggestions welcome.

The time to act is now

November 15, 2005 - 04:37 am

One of the guys from the Linux users' group called on my cell to say that ListenToMe.me.me.uk is currently being held without trial in the bar area of the Tunis Sheraton. It seems the Tunisian Secret service flushed his head down a toilet after he criticised the public transport infrastructure. This is bad, and if you want to know how bad it is check out filthyforeignbogblog, written by some Brit chick who really knows her stuff about just how absolutely disgusting foreign johns are.

According to local sources - including Ahmed's Natalie Portman Tribute Blog - he's had his wireless access privileges revoked while the powers that be decide whether to take him across the yard, put him up against the wall and shoot him, or just ignore him until he goes away.

Ok, people, it's time for action. As of 5am local there will be a candlelit flashblog vigil which will continue until such time as the Tunisians restore ListenToMe.me.me.uk's internet access or he leaves the country - on his own two feet or in a bodybag. It's time to bring the awesome power of the blogosphere to bear on the forces of oppression.

Free at last, thank God I'm free at last

November 16, 2005 - 06:59 am

Haven't slept for more than 30 hours, but we've done it. ListenToMe.me.me.uk came back online at around 5.30am local to say that he'd been released after agreeing to sign a statement declaring that the Tunisian bus system was the best in the world and that he had not in any way been inconvenienced by late-running transport. Seems the UK's Tony Blair intervened personally after seeing a CNN report into the flashblog vigil in Wisconsin where 2,000 naked bloggers formed themselves into a huge peace symbol to demand immediate US military action against Tunisia. God Bless America.

What a week

November 17, 2005 - 10:16 am

I don't know about you, but it's been a hell of a week. I finally decided on Natalie Portman, btw. Dad said he always fancied giving Carrie a roll in the hay, which kind of put me off her a bit. Not much progress on the plasma TV shelf, but I reckon the guys at the local Linux users' group tonite will be able to help me out. It's good to go and grab a couple of beers with the fellas - it's helps take your mind off internet governance for a couple of hours. I'll catch you later, but if you need some illumination in the meantime, here's a few fun sites I can recommend:

  • Linuxcaravanholidays.co.uk
  • natlieportmanhasbreasts.nu
  • carriefisherkicksass.com
  • beststarwarstrailerever.com
  • opensourcepizzadelivery.org
  • linuxcheerleadersgivehead.xxx

MDF or ply? - the people must decide

November 18, 2005 - 00:23 am

Couldn't sleep - again, and despite the beers - after reading on ListenToMe.me.me.uk that the US has kept control of the Internet after all. According to some stuff on Cheyenne Rainbow's Hug the Planet blog, the resulting fall-out could raise mean global temperatures by as much as 0.1 deg C by 2022. That means more than 3,000 Pacific islands submerged as a result of ICANN's failure to wrest control of the domain name system from Uncle Sam. It's the stuff of nightmares. The world really has gone completely mad and there's little or nothing we can do about it, it seems.

Talking of nightmares, this shelf unit for my new 42in plasma TV has got me at my wits' end. I've got it down to two options: MDF or ply? My Dad says ply but the guys at the Linux users' group reckon MDF is the material for today's thinking consumer. I need help!

your Linux boys are right. this is make or break stuff. it's really essential that the correct underpinnings of this crucial infrastructure are properly put in place. you go MDF, bro!

i'd suggest some rugged marine ply, but strengthened with some aircraft aluminum brackets

What about Pacific island matted coconut fiber board - 100 per cent organic/???

sure, but that's just going to delaminate and then you have to apply an expensive proprietry edge trim detail. with MDF, you profile the edge yourself to suit

Hi, I'm new here. The aircraft aluminum bracket idea is cool. Anyone know a supplier in the New Jersey area?

Hello?

Thanks guys

November 19, 2005 - 04:35 am

I just heard that the south west Pacific has been hit by a 9.5 earthquake. Anything left standing will be wiped off the map by the resulting tsunami. Bummer. I suppose that's pretty much the end of the Pacific island matted coconut fiber board market. In any case, I finally went for an MDF and aluminum bracket combo. Thanks siliconchippie and Linuxcarpenter and roll on Christmas!
