Ecommerce boom for Xmas

Spare a thought for posties

Postal workers look set to be kept busier in the run-up to Christmas this year by delivering a staggering 70m packages ordered online.

So says the Royal Mail which reckons that the rise in internet shopping will mean that an extra 15m packages will be delivered this year as more people use the net to buy their pressies.

"Online retail continues to grow at a phenomenal rate," said top postie Richard Roche.

"We predict we will deliver 70 million packages ordered online in the run up to Christmas. We have been working with retailers for many months to ensure we provide a high level of service to their customers this Christmas and that they have an enjoyable online shopping experience."

This assessment is backed by another survey by web site testing outfit SciVisum which reckons that more people are looking to shop online this year hitting the cash registers of traditional high street stores. However not all high street shops will lose out since many punters are looking for brands they could trust such as online versions of high street shops.

"The High Street will be looking for Christmas to make up the numbers, but for many bargain hunters, it simply won't get a look in," said Deri Jones, CEO, SciVisum.

"This is not surprising. Savvy shoppers know that the internet is often the quickest and easiest place to find a bargain - not to mention avoiding the crowds and the queues." Happy shopping. ®
