Sony has stopped manufacturing the PSOne - the redesigned version of the original PlayStation aka the SCPH-100 - it has emerged. With the PS3 due to ship in November, the PS2 is set to become the entry-level system, so there's little need to keep making PSOnes.
However, Sony will continue to promote and sell the system while stocks run down. The PS2 can run PSOne games, as will the PS3 and - thanks to an upcoming games download service - the PSP.
Sony launched the PlayStation in December 1994 in Japan. The US and European roll-outs took place six months later. The PSOne redesign shipped in 2000, and helped drive sales beyond 103m units worldwide. ®
