Toshiba pre-announces next-gen Nvidia mobile GPU

GeForce Go 7900 GS available now, apparently

Nvidia hasn't announced its GeForce Go 7900 GS mobile GPU yet, but Toshiba yesterday said it has begun shipping a gaming-oriented notebook which delivers "state-of-the-art graphics" thanks to the new chip, 256MB of graphics memory and a 17in TruBrite display.

The Centrino-branded Satellite P105-S921 is powered by a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo T2400 backed up with 1GB of dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM. It's got a 160GB Serial ATA hard drive and a dual-layer DVD±R/RW optical drive. Toshiba has built in a pair of Harman Kardon stereo speakers and a "customisable dual-mode touch pad that can provide one-tap short cuts to launch e-mail, internet browser and other programs".

The unit has a five-in-one memory card reader, four USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire connector, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, 56Kbps modem, S-video TV output, a DVI-D port, and mic and headphone 3.5mm sockets - the latter doubles up as an S/PDIF digital optical port.

Toshiba's pre-announcement comes a week after Samsung inadvertently unveiled Intel's upcoming Core Duo T2700 processor - a CPU the chip giant has yet to announce in public.

The $2000 laptop measures 38.8 x 27 x 3.5cm and is available now in the US from "select resellers", Toshiba said. ®
