NEC brings dual-core Xeon to Fault Tolerant crowd

Up for anything

NEC has freshened up one of its fault-tolerant servers with some new chips from Intel and an advanced management package for installing software on-the-fly.

The NEC Express5800/320Ma Fault Tolerant server comes in three configurations. Customers can purchase the box with single-core 3.2GHz, 3.6GHz Xeon chips or 2.8GHz dual-core Xeons. The system with 3.2GHz chips can support up to 8GB of memory, while the other two configurations support up to 16GB of memory.

The latest NEC kit will ship with Active Upgrade technology for upgrading boxes without shutting them down. "Active Upgrade allows system administrators to initiate a 'virtual split' of the FT server system from the console to manage and minimize the downtime while installing critical hot-fix operating system patches, service packs, applications, and system software," NEC said. "In addition, server rollback capabilities ensure step-by-step data protection."

Fault Tolerant systems are, of course, meant to stay up and running at all times. They're used by financial institutions, emergency services and others to guarantee reliable service to customers. The Fault Tolerant gear typically has redundant components all around and a hardened operating system that can withstand momentary lapses.

Along with the speedier chips, the NEC hardware has improved I/O, new remote management tools, and an improved design for easier maintenance.

The Express5800/320Ma starts shipping next month at a list price of $30,000. ®
