UPC picks Nortel for VoIP

Triple play ahoy!

UPC, part of Liberty International, has chosen Nortel to provide the kit for Voice over Internet Protocol, using cable project.

UPC will offer the service to business and residential customers in Austria, France and the Netherlands.

It will use Nortel kit to set up Session Initiation Protocol-based Voip services as a first step to "triple-play" solutions - offering punters internet access along with fixed line and mobile telephony.

Siemens won a contract to provide Voip services over cable in eastern and central Europe.

In other news the company claimed a million Voip customers in Austria, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Switzerland. It has 2.3m Voip customers worldwide.
