T-Mobile gears up to launch Sidekick 3

After the rumours, the reality...

T-Mobile and Danger are due to announce the Hiptop 3/Sidekick 3 today, and early reviews derived from pre-release hardware are already beginning to appear on the web. The new machine's key features: a very nice 240 x 160 screen and a glowing, ten-colour trackball.

Early reports reveal the email and messaging gadget has a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio and Bluetooth 1.2, though it's limited to hosting headsets and transferring contact information, so carrier revenue-reducing mass data transfer is out. USB synchronisation is supported, however. There's a 1.3-megapixel camera on the back with an LED flash.

The screen is capable of showing 65,536 colours, while the trackball can be set to glow in any of ten colours. There's 64MB of RAM and 64MB of Flash on board, expandable with MicroSD memory cards, though by no more than 2GB.

The whole thing weighs 190g and measures 13 x 5.9 x 2.2cm. It goes on sale to existing T-Mobile customers on 28 June, with broader availability kicking in on 10 July. ®
