AOL UK chalks up 100k LLU lines

Kit installed in 200 exchanges

AOL has unbundled more than 100,000 broadband lines since it kicked off investment in local loop unbundling (LLU) earlier this year.

So far the ISP - which is the subject of much media speculation concerning the possible sale of its access business - has installed its kit in around 200 BT exchanges and migrated more than 100,000 punters.

This makes AOL UK one of the largest LLU operators in the country accounting for around one in five of all LLU lines, a spokesman for the firm told El Reg.

In February, AOL confirmed that it planned to invest £120m in LLU to provide broadband and phone services direct to punters.

At the time, AOL UK chief exec Karen Thomson said: "The opportunity to compete on a level playing field with the incumbent will encourage substantial investment in digital services and content in the UK. This will allow the UK to catch up with leading European countries, where unbundling is already delivering higher value services to consumers."

AOL has more than two million subscribers in the UK and around 1.5m broadband punters. ®
