Woolworths.co.uk collapses under mispriced TV rush
£1500 Sharp LCD screen offered for £150
The UK website of the high street retailer Woolworths, fell over today as British punters rushed in to place orders for ultra cheapo LCD TVs.
For a few hours, all LCD TVs were offered on the site for £150 - the going rate for a Sharp 42" LCD TV is around £ 1500.
No it wasn't an unnannounced pre-Christmas offer, And yes it was a mistake. Woolworths is sorry, but it is not going to honour the orders. The company is having enough problems right now, so what else would you expect?
This will disappoint the dozens of bargain-hunting Reg readers who emailed us with their Woolies war stories, and certainly the correspondent who says he received an order confirmation.
Here's a typical account, from Al:
"Unfortunately they pulled the offer and the site before I had a chance to order (the site is back up now with the normal pricing) but a secretary here managed to get in an order for four 42inch LCD TVs, and her sister put in an order for another four! The site then began to 'break down', with error messages all over the shop, then it went down completely.
Oh well. ®
